Microsoft. By the end of October, you will be able to earn the MCSE version.
Given that many Microsoft professionals are in the process of getting
certified on Windows 2000, the overriding question is: When does it make
sense to consider dropping the old track and switching to the new? Ed Tittel
tackles this issue:

First Looks: Media Center Edition 2004:
Worth the Wait
When Microsoft introduced its Windows XP Media Edition OS in tandem with the
first Media Center PC from HP, the reviews were lukewarm. Now Microsoft has
released a true second-generation version of the software, adding more
features, better integration between components, easier to read screens, and
a more intuitive television guide. The OS seems impressive, but the jury is
still out on overall picture quality until we see actual production systems.
Get the details on the
new Media Center OS, plus an exclusive closer look at the interface.
Stevens Tech Tops List of 25 Most Connected
Campuses
Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, N.J, was named the “Most
Connected Campus,” by the Princeton Review in its annual survey of
information technology services and infrastructure in higher education. At
Stevens, undergrads are given Hewlett-Packard Compaq Armada EV0 N800C
notebooks, which they can use to access a wireless network. In a program
called Technogenesis, students, faculty and companies collaborate on
technology product development. They are currently working with Lucent
Technologies on a laser designed to improve the transmission of wireless
information.
To identify the colleges on the list, The Princeton Review collated
responses from 106,000 college students, as well as data from campus
administrators. Criteria included the student/computer ratio, wireless
access on campus, the breadth of the computer science curriculum and
comments from campus students.
The top 10 colleges were:
1. Stevens Institute of Technology
2. Wake Forest University
3. Georgia Institute of Technology
4. Bentley College
5. Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology
6. Bryant College
7. Illinois Institute of Technology
8. Villanova University
9. Hampton University
10. University of South Dakota

| WINDOWS TIPS |

Keyboard Shortcuts
Using keyboard shortcuts can dramatically increase your work efficiency,
especially for repetitive tasks, so try to get into the habit of using your
keyboard instead of your mouse:
 |
WINDOWS LOGO (between CTRL and ALT) -- Hit this key and
your Start menu appears; is that not faster than going over with your mouse
and clicking? |
 |
WINDOWS LOGO + F: Find files or folders. This saves you
from opening the Windows Explorer and selecting find from the menu. Now you
have a one-click computer search! |
 |
F1 -- In Windows applications, and in the OS, F1 is a
universal call to the app's help system. |
 |
F2 -- In Windows Explorer, use F2 to rename files or
folders. This is faster than right-clicking and easier that clicking inside
the file or folder name and waiting for the input field to become available. |
 |
SHIFT+DELETE: Deletes an item immediately without placing
it in the Recycle Bin. Works in most Explorer sub-systems or program
navigations. |
 |
F5 -- This is a universal "Refresh" command, which works in
many Windows applications. Use it to refresh your Explorer file system,
browser and html editors. |
 |
CTRL + Z: Undo your last action. This works in both Windows
and Mac machines and, like CTRL + C for copy and CTRL + V for paste, is a
universal keyboard command. Undo is handy for quickly erasing your last
action in just about any program. |
 |
CTRL + A: Select all the items in the current window. This
is a great shortcut, which in combination with Copy and Paste, will have you
flying around your screen! |
How to hide drives from users Preventing accidents can be a key part of
administrators' jobs. Given that, you might want to hide certain drives from
users if they don't absolutely need access.
NT enables you to hide drives from the obvious access points (Explorer and My
Computer), although a motivated user could still access them from
Start | Run. But you can change that. Follow these steps:
1. Open the Registry Editor.
2. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USERS\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer.
3. Right-click in the right pane, and choose New | DWORD Value.
4. Name the new key Hidden, and press [Enter] twice.
5. In the Edit DWORD Value dialog box, select Decimal.
6. Enter the number corresponding to the drive you want to hide. (A: is 1, B: is
2, C: is 4, D: is 8, E: is 16, and so on.) To hide more than one
drive, add the numeric values assigned to the drives. For example, to hide
drives D: and E:, enter 24.
7. Exit the registry.
The next time the PC boots up, the computer will hide the drives from casual
browsers.
NOTE: Editing the registry is risky, so be sure you have a verified backup
before making any changes.

How does Windows 2000 protect it's shared system
files from being overwritten by non-operating system installation programs?
Choose the correct process.
A. System File Protection
B. System File Checker
C. Windows File Checker
D. Windows File ProtectionAnswer: D - Windows File Protection (WFP)
protects system files by running in the background and detecting attempts to
replace protected system files. WFP is triggered after it receives a directory
change notification on a file in a protected directory. Once this notification
is received, WFP determines which file was changed. If the file is protected,
WFP looks up the file signature in a catalog file to determine if the new file
is the correct Microsoft version. If it is not, the operating system replaces
the file with the correct version from the dllcache directory or the
distribution media. After detecting the replacement of a protected file, WFP
searches for the replaced files in the following order: Search the dllcache
directory. If the system was installed via network install, search the network
install path. Search on the CD. If the file is found in dllcache or the install
source is auto-located, WFP replaces the file without prompting the user and
moves on. If the file cannot be found, WFP displays a dialog box that prompts
the user to either insert distribution media or cancel the restore operation.
WFP also logs an event to the system event log, noting the file replacement
attempt. If the administrative user cancels the WFP file restoration, an event
noting the cancellation is logged. |

Free PDF Utility
- If you use files in Adobe PDF format, you are going to love PDF
Explorer. Just point it to a batch of PDF files and it will show the filename,
title, subject, author and keywords fields. Furthermore, you can edit these
fields and/or store them to a searchable database. Best of all, you can batch
rename the filenames of all the .pdf files to the Acrobat document title. This
later feature is invaluable. It means you can quickly scan through your PDF
files to locate the document you want, just by reading the filename. A top
product. (1.03MB).
